The Chicago Fire have signed the Academy’s star midfielder Sergio Oregel with a Homegrown Player contract that will last until 2025.
The contract, which begins January 1, also includes an option for the club for 2026.
Oregel, 16, has been with the Fire Academy since 2018, when he started playing at U-14 level.
“I want to say a big thank you to my family, friends and coaches who helped me get to this point,” said Oregel. “It’s a dream come true and I’m thrilled to start playing for my hometown club.”
Oregel helped Fire’s U-19 team win the MLS NEXT U-19 championship in July and was named the best player of the tournament.
“Sergio is a talented young midfielder with excellent vision and a strong passion for the game,” said Fire Brigade Technical Director Sebastian Pelzer. “We can’t wait to officially welcome him to the first team and continue to be part of his development.”
Including the rule, the fire will have 10 local players under contract next season.
