Je Tu Il Elle: Chantal Akerman

Another Akerman film, another N/A rating. Characteristic of her oeuvre, Je Tu Il Elle can't really be classified as a narrative film despite the fact that, unlike her other films which I've watched recently, it could be postulated that there was a "plot." But I was only truly interested in the first third. The second two-thirds collapsed into a morass of pretentiousness and awkward, silent sex scenes of which European art-house cinema is so fond. But the first 15-20 minutes are a perfect depiction of depression. Some people may find the fact that it took Julie several days to write a single letter ridiculous, but that happens with depression. There are literally days where I feel like I can only complete ONE task. I don't know if that was Akerman's artistic intention here, but that's my reading of the opening scenes.
